I wanted to explore how to create the luxury feel and aesthetic of Gilda & Pearl at a lower price point and having more wearable mix and match options. I love the options of wearing a full set or styling different pieces to your taste. Diane Houston is much more casual and easy-going while Gilda and Pearl is all about opulence. While Diane Houston is more affordable, as we had a real demand for that from the stockists we work with. We are still focussed on using quality satins sourced from Italy, beautiful laces sourced from the Far East and real silk in our hero products.
The Diane Houston girl is confident and stylish. She isn’t afraid to try new things and explore new opportunities. She likes experimenting with her own style and being bold with it. She likes to brunch with her friends and go to the coolest bars for happy hour.
The Dolly Camisole has to be my favourite. The Dolly Print is intrinsically us- cute, kitschy and fun. I love that you can wear the camisole out with some jeans or cozied up at home with some slippers. The fact that the pin up girls are wearing items from the Gilda & Pearl collection is a beautiful touch which is a detail that we can only achieve by working closely with our print designers.
The Diane Houston collection is inspired by 50s kitsch – our pin up and kitty prints are a nod to the fun prints found on women’s day dresses and is very tongue in cheek – it’s all about #loungeloving, chilling out on the sofa and being comfortable yet chic!
I always look to striking, independent and fashion forward women when designing. Diane Houston is intended to appeal to a much younger audience than Gilda & Pearl. The writer, entrepreneur and actor Tavi Gevinson inspired me. She began her blog Style Rookie aged 11, and became a feature on all the front rows at Fashion Weeks, but in her recent years has developed the independent Rookie Magazine aimed at teen girls and contributed to by them. Tavi’s style has matured but she is still a sartorial inspiration to me and I’d love to see her in the Leia camisole.
Our Dolly pin up print is our Diane Houston signature print, exclusively designed for us by an illustrator. Dolly and her friend Pearl are wearing designs from Gilda & Pearl’s signature collection - the Ava babydoll and Dahlia robe - as a nod to our mainline collection. The prowling cheetahs featured in the Kitty print are our playful take on the AW17 animal print trend. It brings a smile to everyone’s faces when they see it, as it’s an animal print in a way that they haven’t seen before!
I hope you love the collection as much as we all do.
